The Right Way to Get ELD Compliant

By: Matt Kropp, CEO at FR8Star

Ready or not - the ELD mandate is coming on December 18, 2017 and you need to be compliant to avoid penalties. If you don’t have an ELD solution yet, you’re not alone! Perhaps you were waiting for the White House to overturn the regulation. Or you were counting on OOIDA to convince the Supreme Court to get involved. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court declined to hear the suit, and action by the President is increasingly unlikely - leaving the only remaining option to get on

board. Fortunately, getting compliant can be easy and inexpensive if you know what you need and where to get it.

An electronic logging device (ELD) records a driver’s Record of Duty Status and replaces the need for paper logbooks. Come December 18, unless you operate locally or have other certain exceptions, you must have a USDOT-approved logging device.  But not all logging devices are created equal.  In fact, if you act before the mandate takes effect, you can use an Automatic On-Board Recording

Ready or not - the ELD mandate is coming on December 18, 2017 and you need to be compliant to avoid penalties. If you don’t have an ELD solution yet, you’re not alone! Device (referred to as an “AOBRD”) until December 16, 2019 instead of an ELD.

ELD vs. AOBRD
According to the U.S. Department o f Transportation, an AOBRD must “identify sensor failures and edited data” whereas an ELD must “have the capability to monitor its compliance (engine connectivity, timing, position, etc.) for detectable malfunctions and data inconsistencies.” To put that in English, the HOS record in an ELD can’t modified or updated while AOBRDs can. Because drivers can edit AOBRD logs, they are able to correct errors that rob them of valuable driving time.

AOBRDs are already common for fleets who want to simplify HOS record keeping or who have previously had HOS compliance issues. And carriers that have an AOBRD before the ELD mandate takes effect on December 18, 2017 will be able to continue using that AOBRD until December 16, 2019 (source).

Turning a mandate into an opportunity
While it may feel like a burden to comply with the ELD mandate, there are many benefits. Logging hours electronically helps you manage your drivers’ HOS in an organized fashion.  And,  using an ELD with a fleet management system gives you GPS tracking of your trucks’ current locations, estimates their arrival times, and alerts you when they arrive or depart.  This combined with ability to see how many hours your drivers have left means you can better optimize your truck schedules and routes, increasing profitability,

believes that carriers should have a low-cost way to comply with the ELD mandate. As such, we are partnering with IRP Inc. and Gorilla Safety to offer an AOBRD for $19.50 per month and no up-front cost with a one year contract. The AOBRD integrates with the free FR8Star.com fleet management system and can be upgraded to an ELD at no extra cost.

No matter what solution you choose, don’t wait until the last minute.  Inventory of ELD/AOBRD devices is likely to be scarce as the deadline draws near and you want to be sure to meet the cutoff to use the less strict AOBRD standard.
